We aim at developing new human-machine interfaces with whom we could
dialog. In particular we are interesting in developing virtual
humanoids who can converse with users. They are endowed with similar
communicative capabilities as humans have. They can show their
emotions through their face. They can gesture while talking, indicate
a point in space with their gaze. They can talk but also can listen to
other's talk. They are becoming real conversants. During this
presentation we will describe some works we have conducted toward
creating virtual agents that are expressive, distinctive, and subtle
in their behaviors. They are active participants in a conversation;
both while talking and while listening. We will also present some
research we have undertaken to create distinctive humanoid agents,
that is agents with their own style and manner of conversing.
