Music is often played while people work. However, limited research has investigated the effect music will have on a person and how it will subsequently affect one’s work performance. This project aims to explore whether certain types of music will affect one’s emotion and as a result, affect a person’s work performance, such as error rates and decision making quality. Experiments will be designed to explore the links between (1) the music played; (2) one’s emotional response to the music; (3) the type of task performed; and (4) one’s task performance. Results from the study will have practical and theoretical contributions: the findings not only can apply to contexts where a person listens to music while they work, but also impact on the understanding of human perception, emotion and cognition.
