Integrating Real-Time Motion-Capture with Immersive Virtual Reality for Investigating Aspects of Human Perception and Action

We describe an implementation of Real-time motion capture technologies with immersive virtual reality environments to support combined action and perception research; two fields which have previously been separate. The system described can combine multiple sources of information from motion capture, physiological detectors, motion sensitive tools, and interactive devices such as tilt-table treadmills and recumbent bikes. This provides a wealth of data for analysis along with sources of real-time feedback that can be combined with the stimuli in novel ways which were previously impossible. This now allows us to simultaneously investigate perception, action, and their interactions.
