Visual-Spatial Cues in Disambiguating Multiple Spoken Messages

The perception of speech in a noisy environment possesses a uniquely complex problem for the human auditory system. To solve this problem humans make use of a range of additional information, including spatial cues to the location of a speech source and visual cues such as lip movements. When two spoken messages emanate from the same location in space, tracking of one of the messages is facilitated by a video synchronised to one of the messages. Somewhat surprisingly, this facilitation was greatest when the video was displaced from the source of the auditory stimulus. In the planned experiments we explore the importance of the cues to the origin of the sounds in reproducing this effect.
